COVID-19 Update from Mayor Strickland (4/5)

After having weeks of nothing but clouds and rain, the weather has been almost perfect this weekend tempting us all to let our guards down. But after reading this article, it makes me all the more proud of our community. Thank you, Memphis, for staying vigilant and keeping your distance from one another. This will not last forever, and we will get through this together.

Important Small Business Resources

Small businesses have been hit especially hard by COVID-19. The U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Paycheck Protection Program provides guaranteed loans for 8 weeks while encouraging businesses to keep their employees on payroll. Learn more and apply for this program here.

The Small Business Administration provides a number of other loan resources for small businesses to utilize when operating their business during this time. For more information on loans or how to connect with a lender, visit SBA’s website by clicking here.

Economic Relief

COVID-19 has financially hurt many us across our country. To help relieve the burden on as many people as possible, the federal government has put new laws and regulations into place to help our nation.

If an individual makes less than $75,000 a year, they will receive a $1,200 check. Couples filing jointly who make less than $150,000 a year will receive a check for $2,400 with an additional $500 per eligible child. The IRS will use your 2019 tax returns if you’ve already filed. If you have not, they will use your 2018 tax returns. This money should begin to arrive within two to three weeks. For more information on these economic payments, click here

Due to COVID-19, the federal income tax filing date has been extended from April 15 to July 15. This will allow for more time and relief for those struggling to meet the original deadline.  Learn more, here

Student loans payments will also be delayed without interest or penalty for six months for 95 percent of borrowers. For more information on this student loan relief, click here
